United National Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC)
KAICIID and the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) have collaborated since 2017, when they signed an MoU to signify their commitment to foster peace through interreligious and intercultural dialogue. This MoU was renewed in 2020 and 2024, with a focus on the significant potential of faith-based organizations, youth, women and the media in advancing interreligious and intercultural dialogue, particularly in societies affected by identity-based conflicts.
Since its establishment in 2005, UNAOC has become a leader in intercultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation. The Alliance maintains a global network of partners including states, international and regional organizations, civil society groups, foundations, and the private sector to improve cross-cultural relations between diverse nations and communities. It operates across four main pillars: Education, Youth, Migration and Media.
The main objectives of UNAOC’s programme activities are to facilitate global conversation on the challenges and opportunities for living in a landscape of diversity; prevent intercultural tensions and crises; combat stereotypes, misperceptions, discrimination and xenophobia; and support innovative grassroots initiatives that contribute to intercultural dialogue, understanding, mutual respect and cooperation across divides.
KAICIID has supported the development of the UN Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites. In October 2020, KAICIID and UNAOC partnered with the G20 Interfaith Forum Association and the National Committee for Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the organization of the 7th G20 Interfaith Forum, an annual platform which promotes dialogue and cooperation between religious leaders and policymakers on the world’s most pressing humanitarian and development issues. Recent collaborations have focused on e-learning opportunities around global education and interfaith and intercultural dialogue, through a consortium led by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe.
KAICIID has been a member of the UNAOC Group of Friends since 2019.
