Young people across Africa are leading peace efforts in their communities, yet they’re often labeled as part of the problem instead of the solution. With 60 percent of the continent under 25, it’s time to change that narrative.

In this 30-minute session, Harriet, a Kenyan youth peace advocate and KAICIID Fellow from the coast region, shares real experiences from the frontlines of grassroots peacebuilding—from mobilizing young people in conflict mitigation to strengthening community networks for long-term peace.

With hands-on experience in peacebuilding and security, Harriet will break down the biggest challenges, how she’s handled pushback, and what keeps her going. She’ll also share lessons from working with youth and security officers in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties, creating better relationships to prevent conflict and build trust.

SPEAKERS

Harriet Atieno Ahalo

Harriet is a Kenyan Youth Peace advocate and KAICIID Fellow working in the coast region. Much of her work involves championing youth of her age to take active roles in peace building and conflict mitigation. She currently holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology and security studies from Egerton University. She is also an Alumna of the Mindanao Peace Building Institute where she gained fundamental knowledge on understanding culture as a resource in peace building and human-centered approaches to security.

Harriet has been involved in strengthening the capacity of women, youth and local community structures on their roles in peace building and conflict mitigation. She has facilitated dialogues between the youth and security officers to improve their working relations to prevent crime within Mombasa and Kilifi Counties.

Malaz Yousif, KAICIID Programme Officer, Africa Region

KAICIID Programme Officer, Africa Region Malaz Yousif currently serves as programme officer for Africa with KAICIID, focusing specifically on Nigeria and partnerships there. Before assuming this role, she held the position of Project Coordinator for the Interfaith Dialogue on Violent Extremism, known as iDove. In this capacity, she implemented highly successful strategies for engaging young people, which culminated in the establishment of a network of youth peace builders spanning across Africa, Europe, and Asia. Throughout her career, Malaz has demonstrated her dedication to peace building, interfaith dialogue, and the promotion of social cohesion. Her efforts have consistently focused on creating an environment where these individuals can actively contribute to building peace in their communities and at the policy level. One of Malaz’s distinctive qualities is her strong advocacy for the inclusion of youth in IRD and peacebuilding programs. Malaz Yousif holds an MSc in Health Psychology, which she earned from the University of Southampton, and a BA in Psychology from the American University in Cairo.
