Alwani is a senior lecturer in the Department of Aqidah and Islamic Thought at the Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya. She teaches courses such as comparative religion and interfaith dialogue. Since March 2020, she has been appointed as the Deputy Director at the Universiti Malaya Centre for Civilisational Dialogue. As an academic, her research interest is in the area of dialogue, which started with her specialisation during the PhD in which she studied the Prophet Muhammad's dialogue with Jews and Christians. She helps to organise programmes of interfaith dialogue such as the forum on religious extremism, environmental issues and unity dialogue on national principles. She has also been on the main panel in a small scriptural reasoning session between Muslims and Christians. In the future, she hopes to successfully organise dialogue training to enhance interpersonal communication among multiracial Malaysians.
