Peace is a Shared Responsibility: Reflections from the Mafra Dialogues 2025

In a world increasingly fragmented by conflict and division, efforts toward dialogue, understanding, and peace have become more critical than ever. Whether in Europe, the Middle East, or other regions globally, conflicts continue to unravel the very fabric of our societies, posing challenges that transcend borders and demand our collective attention and action.
As we navigate this new global reality, characterized by interconnectedness and interdependence, we must recognize that sustainable peace is not simply a goal but an ongoing process requiring active participation from all sectors of society. The complexities of contemporary conflicts underscore that peace cannot be the sole responsibility of individual states or institutions. Instead, a collaborative, inclusive, and comprehensive approach is necessary, one that moves beyond crisis management toward lasting solutions rooted in prevention and dialogue.
The Mafra Dialogues 2025, convened by the Promotion of Latin America and the Caribbean (IPDAL) in partnership with the Institute the International Dialogue Centre (KAICIID) and the Municipality of Mafra exemplified this collaborative spirit. Over two days, representatives from diverse political, religious, and social backgrounds engaged in deep and impactful discussions aimed at formulating tangible and sustainable peacebuilding strategies.
One significant outcome was the recognition of interreligious dialogue as a pivotal mechanism in the pursuit of peace. The dialogues highlighted the importance of establishing and nurturing safe, inclusive platforms where religious leaders and policymakers can engage constructively. Such initiatives are essential not only for addressing existing tensions but also for proactively building resilient communities capable of navigating potential conflicts.
KAICIID’s commitment to this vision was prominently displayed throughout the Mafra Dialogues. Through strategic partnerships with organizations like the Institute for the Promotion of Latin America and the Caribbean (IPDAL), we demonstrated our continued dedication to creating spaces where diverse voices come together to advance mutual understanding, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence.
As Acting Secretary General of KAICIID, I emphasized the transformative potential of multilateral partnerships in my address, highlighting that dialogue is not merely theoretical but a practical, necessary tool for overcoming societal divisions. Our core principle is clear: by bridging divides between religious and secular communities, lasting solutions to today's complex challenges can be achieved.
Ultimately, the Mafra Dialogues 2025 reinforced my firm belief that the future we collectively seek—a future of peace, justice, and mutual respect—is attainable only through sustained, collaborative efforts. It reaffirmed KAICIID’s commitment to peacebuilding through continuous dialogue and underlined that our shared responsibility for peace demands unwavering dedication, active participation, and a genuine willingness to listen, understand, and bridge divides.
