Development of a Package of Training Materials for Religious Leaders in Rwanda on Faith-led Food Systems Transformation

Consultancy

Location: Home Based

An Introduction to KAICIID
The International Dialogue Centre (KAICIID) is a unique International Organization which brings together religious leaders, policymakers, and experts with the aim of finding common solutions to shared problems. Our vision is a world where there is respect, understanding, and cooperation among people, justice, peace and reconciliation, and an end to the abuse of religion to justify oppression, violence, and conflict.

We are a diverse team of dedicated professionals who deliver results across the globe.

The World Resources Institute (WRI) has developed a suite of training materials to support stakeholders in addressing critical food system issues, such as improved production, consumption, and waste practices. Faith-based leaders have a unique influence in shaping community values and behaviors related to food stewardship. In Rwanda, where agriculture is a cornerstone of livelihoods and food security, leveraging religious teachings can help amplify the importance of transforming the food system.

Religious texts - such as the Qur’an and the Kinyarwanda Holy Bible - contain principles and directives that align with reducing waste, promoting responsible consumption, and ensuring equitable distribution. Building a bridge between these religious references and existing WRI training materials will help increase resonance and adoption among Rwandan religious leaders, fostering community-wide change in line with both religious values and national priorities on food security.

Purpose:
The purpose of this consultancy is to develop a package of food system intervention training materials specific to faith and the Rwandan context. Conducted in consultation with faith groups in Rwanda and WRI Food System experts, the consultant should:
• Embed relevant religious dictates from the Qur’an and the Kinyarwanda Holy Bible that reinforce responsible food system stewardship.
• Ensure the content is culturally and contextually appropriate for religious leaders in Rwanda.
• Align the adapted training materials with WRI Diets and Waste Standards and Rwanda’s national food security strategies.

Objectives:
The Consultant will report to the Project Coordinators (two focal points at KAICIID and WRI) and will work closely with a small advisory group including representatives from faith communities and national food security stakeholders.

The consultant is expected to:

• Review existing WRI training materials on food system transformation (production, diets, waste)
• Identify, research, and select relevant Qur’anic verses and Biblical passages (Kinyarwanda Holy Bible) that align with WRI’s approach to food stewardship.
• Leverage training materials from other international organizations and existing faith groups.
• Integrate these religious references into the training modules in a way that is theologically sound and easy for religious leaders to communicate.
• Contextualize the training material to Rwanda’s socio-economic and cultural realities, including common challenges to food system sustainability
• Develop facilitator notes, case studies, and examples relevant to both Islamic and Christian congregations in Rwanda.
• Ensure the adapted material retains technical accuracy as per WRI Standards.

Scope of Work:

1.    Desk Review
- Review the WRI training material and other relevant resources on food system sustainability.
- Review existing faith-oriented guides on food production, consumption, or waste (i.e., Farming God’s Way).
- Identify relevant “spheres of influence” that faith actors could target with these materials (i.e., farmers, policymakers, schools, etc.)
- Review Rwanda’s national policies and strategies related to food security and waste reduction.

2.    Religious Content Integration
- Identify and validate scriptural references from the Qur’an and the Kinyarwanda Holy Bible related to food stewardship, avoiding waste, and equitable distribution.
- Work with theological advisors from both faith traditions to ensure correct interpretation.

3.    Adaptation & Localization
- Modify training modules to incorporate religious messages alongside technical content.
- Include Rwandan examples, stories, and case studies that reflect local food systems, cultural practices, and community structures.

4.    Outputs Preparation
- Produce adapted training modules with integrated religious references.
- Prepare facilitator guides with speaking points for faith leaders.
- Provide a short summary document highlighting the religious basis for system transformation for each faith tradition.
